Usage Information

Preparation:

Mortar-bound Stone (New or Unpainted) -- Make sure mortar is sound and not crumbling. All surfaces to be painted must be free of dirt, dust, oil, grease, mold and mildew, curing compounds & sealers, and any other contaminates must be removed from the surface and pores of the concrete to insure that the stain has good contact with the substrate. Oil & grease should be scrubbed clean with a detergent or trisodium phosphate diluted in water. Mildew should be killed with bleach. Best results will be obtained with additional pressure cleaning. New or bare concrete should be etched with muriatic acid (1 part acid & 2 parts water). Allow acid solution to react for 15-20 minutes on the surface. Do not allow the solution to dry out. Smooth trowelled concrete must be etched until a 100 grit sandpaper-like feel is obtained. Etching opens up the pores of the concrete to allow penetration of the stain. Concrete should then be thoroughly rinsed with water and allowed to completely dry (24 hours min.) before staining. NOTE: All new concrete should be allowed to cure for 45 days before applying stain.

Epoxy-Bound Stone -- Make sure the surface is sound, and not crumbling. Tuf-Top Chattahoochee Sealer will not re-bond stone or correct weak surfaces and/or moisture intrusion. Pressure wash or thoroughly scrub surface to remove all traces of dirt, and other contamination. Mildew/algae should be killed with a solution of 1-part Bleach to 4-parts water. Allow to dry completely before application (at least 24 hours), or moisture blushing may result

Over Paint (Tuf-Top Stain) -- May be applied over most xylene-based acrylic stains if they are firmly bonded to the surface (a small test patch is recommended). Make sure they are free of any contaminates -- follow cleaning directions for new concrete. TUF TOP CHATT SEALER will not adhere satisfactorily to epoxies, polyurethanes, alkyds, water-based floor paints, silicate sealers, curing compounds, membranes, surface hardeners, etc.

Application:

Mortar Bound Stone & Concrete/Masonry -- Apply with roller, brush, airless, or conventional type sprayer. For most applications, two coats are preferred. Apply first coat liberally, allow to dry (2-4 hours depending on weather), and apply second coat. For best results, do not dilute. Allow overnight drying for light foot traffic and 48 hours before heavy foot traffic. DO NOT OVERBUILD, APPLY IN “THIN” COATS (EXTENDED DRY TIMES, & DIRT PICK-UP MAY RESULT).

Stained or Painted Driveways and Walks -- Same as “Mortar” application, above.

Epoxy-bound Chattahoochee Stone -- Apply 1 to 2 thin coats of material with a ¼” to 3/8” nap roller. Apply sealer to the top surface of the stone only, and do not saturate the surface. Allow 2 to 4 hours between coats. Do not apply in heavy coats, extended drying, dirt pickup and poor performance/longevity may result.

Limitations:

  • Do not apply when air or surface temperatures are below 50*F (10*C) or are expected to fall there before coating can dry.
  • Do not apply to a wet or damp surface
  • May not adhere to some alkyd, urethane or silicone modified coatings.
  • Do not apply when it may rain or if dew may condense on the surface before CHATT SEALER will have a chance to dry.
  • Gasoline and strong solvents will re-wet CHATT SEALER. If spilled on surface, allow evaporating rather than wiping it up. Coating will then recover.
  • Not recommended for vehicle traffic.

DO NOT APPLY TO SURFACES THAT MAY GET WET AND BECOME SLIPPERY TO FOOT TRAFFIC. THIS IS A GLOSSY COATING AND IT WILL GET SLICK WHEN WET. IF THE SURFACE HAS NOT ALREADY BEEN TREATED TO REDUCE SLIP HAZARDS, SAND OR OTHER MATERIAL SHOULD BE ADDED TO THIS PRODUCT BEFORE OR DURING APPLICATION TO REDUCE THIS CONDITION. IT IS THE SOLE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE APPLICATOR OR OWNER TO DETERMINE THE SUITABILITY AND SAFETY OF APPLYING THIS PRODUCT IN AREAS OF PEDESTRIAN TRAFFIC.

Drying Time:

Dry to Touch: 1-3 hours, and can be walked on after overnight drying.

Low temperatures and high humidity can extend drying and curing time. Moisture and dew on the surface will halt the curing until it dries off again and may result in a moisture blush (white haze) and should be taken into consideration.
